AVPN Announces USD 3 Million Asian Youth Mental Wellbeing Fund

First Asia-Wide Philanthropic Pooled Fund focused on Youth Mental Wellbeing In The Region

AVPN, the largest network of social investors in Asia, announced today the launch of a USD 3 million Asian Youth Mental Wellbeing Fund (the “Fund”) at the AVPN Global Conference 2023. The Fund is the first philanthropic pooled fund that focuses on youth mental wellbeing across Southeast Asia and South Asia. Yayasan Hasanah, the foundation of Khazanah Nasional, the Malaysian government’s sovereign wealth fund, will support AVPN to catalyse private sector support towards this important cause in Malaysia. Additionally, the Fund has received the support of Chevron and other organisations.

The Fund was launched at the AVPN Global Conference 2023 by Malaysia’s Minister of Youth and Sports, Hannah Yeoh, who highlighted the importance of mental health in Asia, “It is crucial that we take action to address the mental health crisis our youths face, and help them overcome challenges in their developmental years. I am thrilled to witness AVPN launching this greatly needed Asian Youth Mental Wellbeing Fund with local and regional funders to address these challenges across Asia, including Malaysia.”

The pressing urgency to tackle mental wellbeing challenges among youths has led to the creation of the Fund. Mental health is the second largest contributor to years of healthy life lost to disability in Asia, but barriers to treatment persist due to systemic issues, lack of accurate data and monitoring, and funding disparities. AVPN recognises the negative effects of mental health challenges on youth’s wellbeing and economy, highlighting the importance of early intervention for future wellbeing.

Unlike conventional funds, the AVPN Asian Youth Mental Wellbeing Fund will put youths at the centre of the grant disbursement decision-making process. Adopting a ‘for youths, by youths’ mindset, the Fund will be forming a committee of experts – of which will comprise young impact leaders – to identify needs on the ground across Asia, and evaluate the quality of applications that come in.

AVPN plans to raise USD 3 million to support scalable and effective solutions in Southeast and South Asia over the next three years. The partnership between AVPN and Yayasan Hasanah will further enhance the reach and effectiveness of the Fund in addressing mental health issues among young people in the region.

Dato’ Shahira Ahmed Bazari, Trustee and Managing Director of Yayasan Hasanah said, “Our hope is to enable youths in Malaysia to realise their full potential and this includes addressing important issues to them such as mental health. As the convenor, collaborator, and catalyst for change in the social impact sector in Malaysia, we look forward to making a difference for our youths in partnership with a social investor network like AVPN, which has a global reach and an Asian impact focus.”

The Fund intends to achieve the following objectives:

  • Support and foster scalable and effective solutions formulated by credible, robust nonprofit organisations
  • Unite a community of funders that bring scale and sustainability to a common portfolio
  • Reduce barriers faced by youths in achieving mental wellbeing

“Youth mental wellbeing is a complex, multigenerational challenge and it is a pressing need across our region,” says Naina Subberwal BatraCEO of AVPN. “It is important that we take a collaborative approach in tackling this issue. The AVPN Asian Youth Mental Wellbeing Fund will not only unite a community of funders towards this common goal, but will also bring together diverse experts who can share best practices and ensure the right resources are being efficiently deployed to selected non-profit organisations.”

The AVPN Asian Youth Mental Wellbeing Fund will focus on the Southeast and South Asia’s mental wellbeing ecosystems by funding innovative impact organisations that address mental wellbeing conditions among young people. With the experience of building trust-based philanthropy models in Asia, AVPN plans to provide unrestricted funding and non-financial support to non-profit organisations. This not only helps build trust between funders and grantees, but also lends a stronger voice to grantees; instead of prescribing how funds are to be used, the Fund will empower grantees to have the autonomy to grow and innovate around their emergent needs.

The call for applications for the AVPN Asian Youth Mental Wellbeing Fund will open in September 2023. AVPN encourages innovative non-profit organisations and social enterprises to apply for the Fund and help make a difference in the mental wellbeing of youth in the region. For more information about the AVPN Asian Youth Mental Wellbeing Fund, please visit https://avpn.asia/philanthropic-fund/youth-mental-wellbeing-fund/  or reach out to AVPN at funds@avpn.asia.

Non-Sugar Sweeteners in the Limelight: FICCI Seminar Dispels Myths and Uncovers the Health Advantages of Low-Calorie Sweeteners

FICCI today organised a seminar on Deciphering the WHO NUGAG guidelines on the Use of Non-Sugar Sweeteners (NSS). The seminar provided an overview of the latest scientific evidence and recommendations on NSS from the World Health Organization (WHO) and leading Indian experts. FICCI acknowledged the pressing need for action and emphasised the importance of adopting measures that promote ‘Smart choices, smart benefits and a smart future’.

As per the recent study conducted by the Indian Council of Medical Research–India Diabetes (ICMR-INDIAB), confirming that India is home to 101 million diabetics, making India a diabetic nation today.
Prominent experts from medical, nutritional, and scientific fields, including Dr. V. Mohan Padma Shri Awardee, Dr. B. Sesikeran, Dr. Mangesh Tiwaskar, Dr. Rajeev Chawla, Dr. Jagmeet Madan, and Dr. Pulkit Mathur, actively participated in the seminar, sharing their perspectives, and enriching the discussions. Ms Jyoti Vij, Additional Director General, FICCI, and Mr Tarun Arora, President of FICCI Centre for Nutrition Excellence, expressed their opinions regarding the reasoning behind these guidelines. The focal point of the discussion emphasised the crucial role that low/no-calorie sweeteners play in decreasing sugar and calorie consumption, assisting in weight management, and enabling product reformulation in accordance with public health recommendations.
During the event, renowned speakers mentioned the following:
Mr Tarun Arora, President FICCI Centre for Nutrition Excellence, said, “The WHO guidelines say substantive discussions are required, and country-specific policy is required. The discussion among the experts in India clearly indicates that the status quo on sweeteners is to be maintained, and long-term studies in the country are required.”
Dr V Mohan, Chairman and Chief of Diabetology – Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities Centre, Chennai, said, “It is recommended to reduce the carbohydrate – sugar intake. Substituting added sugar in tea/ coffee with one to two tablets is just fine. What is not ok is excess consumption of products just because it doesn’t have sugar. We have just completed a study on replacing added sugar in daily tea/ coffee/ milk with sweeteners to understand its effect on health, and we are presenting the results in ADA. This is one of the largest randomised clinical studies on sweeteners done so far in India.”
Former Director National Institute of Nutrition, ICMR -Hyderabad Dr B Sesikeran, emphasized that the risk of consuming sugar is much higher than the minimal risk associated with sweeteners, with limited data from India. He advocated for further research and data generation to manage risks effectively.
Esteemed authority Dr Rajeev Chawla, Senior Diabetologist and Director, North Delhi Diabetes Centre, New Delhi, Past President, RSSDI said “The alarming rise in type-II diabetes and the staggering number of individuals with pre-diabetes necessitates urgent action and awareness. There is a need to advocate for the use of non-nutritive sweeteners, approved by global regulatory bodies, to provide sweetness without compromising the management of diabetes.”
Dr Jagmeet Madan, a distinguished figure serving as the Principal, Professor, Director (Research and Consultancy), Sir Vithal Das Thackersey College of Home Science (Autonomous), SNDTWU, Mumbai, National President, Indian Dietetic Association, said, “Prediabetes, Insulin resistance is striking sub-clinically across young adults today both in overweight and lean obese. It is evident that the key determinants are total empty calories and the quality of food in the diet. Priming the taste buds to get acquainted with less sweet tastes right from childhood is crucial. While following a healthy diet, these sugar swaps with sweeteners can be a stepping stone which can help in reducing the added sugar intake.”
Dr. Mangesh Tiwaskar, a highly regarded Consultant Physician and Diabetologist at Shilpa Medical Research Centre, Mumbai said, “sweeteners can promote diet healthfulness by increasing the palatability of nutrient foods and beverages. He further stated that NNS consumption may be a marker for other positive health behaviours and lifestyles. As far as the BMI is concerned, all the non-nutritional sweeteners are either weight neutral or sometimes help you to sustain lost weight. Evidence reveals that the use of NNS influences the microbial composition of the oral mucosa,” he added. “Numerous human studies and clinical reviews have unanimously concluded that low-calorie sweeteners (LCS) have no impact on appetite, hunger, or the desire for sweetness. It is now well-established that LCS consumption does not affect the normal physiological mechanisms related to hunger and appetite, as affirmed by scientific research,” he stated.
Dr Pulkit Mathur, an esteemed professor and the head of the Department of Food and Nutrition and Food Technology at Lady Irwin College, University of Delhi, emphasised the need for more data to understand the consumption of NNS and their effect on health. These studies need to have a well-defined study design, with a larger sample size, more homogenous samples, and monitoring the overall diet esp. mapping the total energy intake. The portion size intake is very crucial to manage the issues of overweight/ obesity today.

In its third edition this year, TIME100 Most Influential Companies list honours organisations – across sectors including health care, entertainment, technology, retail and energy – that have made substantial contributions towards shaping industries and redefining the way we live and work. To assemble the list, TIME solicited nominations across sectors, and polled its global network of contributors and correspondents, as well as outside experts. Then
TIME editors evaluated each on key factors, including impact, innovation, ambition, and success. The result is a diverse group of 100 businesses helping chart an essential path forward. TIME said, “Unlike its competitors, Meesho doesn’t charge sellers a commission, which it says enables it to sell 60% of its products for less than $4, in reach for Indian families that make less than $6,000 a year.” This recognition validates Meesho’s trailblazing achievements and its commitment to democratizing internet commerce for everyone through an inclusive and egalitarian platform. The company has empowered millions of small businesses to come online and create digital storefronts, which has not only boosted their earning potential but also helped generate employment at scale. At the same time, Meesho’s focus on catering to underserved consumers through affordable and relevant products has driven inclusion from both urban and rural India.
“We are honoured and humbled to be recognised by TIME as one of the 100 Most Influential Companies in the world. Here, students will be presented with a unique pick of universities, and the panel would assess them for suitability, ranging from Adelhi University, Golden Gate University, Cumberland University, Anderson University, UWLA, Marshall University, Toledo University, Louisville University, University of South Alabama, Judson University, University of the Cumberlands, Murray State University, Alderson University, Faulkner University, Alderson Broaddus University and University of Louisville.”

Doubt-solving strengthened the hold on the topic: Malay Kedia

JEE Advanced Rank: 08 Allen Career Institute
Father: Bhaskar Kedia (Saleshead, Private Company) Mother: Shweta Kedia (home tutor)
Date of Birth: October 27, 2005
Malay has secured All India Rank 08 in JEE Advanced-2023. Now Malay will do a B.Tech. from the CS branch of IIT Mumbai. Malay told me that I had prepared according to the guidance of Allen faculties for success in JEE Advanced. In addition to clearing the theory in physics and math, more emphasis was placed on practice, whereas in chemistry, preparation was done with full focus on the NCERT syllabus. I used to practise the questions again and again. This strengthened my confidence. The modules and study material provided by Allen are perfect. Along with my parents,  I have received the full cooperation of Allen’s faculties and mentors in my success. They used to motivate me from time to time. It was a good decision for me to prepare for JEE from Allen. My performance improved with the weekly tests, and the regular doubt-solving strengthened my grip on the topics. I want to do research in physics after my B.Tech. The family is originally from Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. Malay Kedia had scored 99.99 percentile in the JEE Main January 2023 session exam and secured All India Rank 4 by securing a perfect 300 out of 300 in the final result. Apart from this, I passed 10th grade with 99 percent marks. Besides being an NTSE scholar, Malay secured All India Rank 6 in the KVPY SA stream and won a silver medal in the Astronomy Olympiad. Apart from this, after being successful in the OCSC camp of ICHO recently, he is now going to represent India in ICHO, which will be held in Switzerland from July 16 to 15. Malay has also been selected for the International Science School to be organized by the Harry Messel International School in Sydney, the capital of Australia.
