To empower and educate expecting couples, Dr. K. Shilpi Reddy, Clinical Director of KIMS Cuddles in association with Cordlife Sciences and Dr. K. Shilpi Reddy Foundation is pleased to announce its upcoming event, Mrs MOM 2023 in Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, and Vizag after completing successfully 6 seasons of Cuddles Mrs MOM in Hyderabad. This event is specifically designed to address the needs and concerns of pregnant couples, offering them vital information, resources, and support throughout their journey to parenthood. Dr. K. Shilpi Reddy said that expecting couples can register their names by dialing 9503606049 number or by visiting mrsmomevent.com, and drkshilpireddy.com websites.

The event will take place on 15th October at Bengaluru, 29th October at Chennai, 5th November at Vizag, 19, 24, and 25th November at Hyderabad, and the grand finale will be at Santhi Sarovar, Gachibowli, Hyderabad on 26th November. Couples, whichever month they are in, and even if they don't know anything about pregnancy, they can come and participate, said Dr. K. Shilpi Reddy. The details are here.

Those who participate in this program will get enormous knowledge and abundant confidence. They can make informed decisions for themselves and their offspring. A healthy pregnancy and parenthood will be possible. Physical, mental, emotional, psychological, and spiritual wellness is important for pregnant couples and their family. 85% of those who participated in these programs for the last six years had normal deliveries.

Obesity and PCOD issues
Most of the women from the metro cities are facing issues like obesity, diabetes, and pcod. Not having proper food, sitting all the time, and not having any kind of physical activity are the main culprits. Most of them are having fertility issues. Even if they get pregnant through IVF or other methods, it is a high-risk pregnancy only. Nearly 50% of the women from Hyderabad are facing these issues, and they are causing most of the c-section cases. The newborn children are also facing issues like child obesity and juvenile diabetes. Mrs MOM is conducted to overcome all these issues.

Husbands are also important
Most of the families are nuclear in the metro cities. Husbands, who don't know what to do or what not to do are suffering. So, we welcome both husband and wife to this program. Here we teach them how to take care of their pregnant wife. What kind of food does she need, what to feed the children, how to take care of them, and how to take care of the wife after delivery is also taught to them.

Those who participate in this program should also tell their neighbors about the advantages of this. Nearly 85-95% of the deliveries in Telangana are c-sections only. That's why the state government is moving swiftly to encourage natural deliveries. Small changes in our lifestyle, and food are needs of the hour. Psychological and spiritual well-being will lead to the natural delivery and well-being of both mother and child. All these are part of this program.

Young people push policymakers for action at world’s largest forum for adolescents

Governments are listening and responding with new pledges and plans

The world’s largest online meeting of adolescents and young people, the Global Forum for Adolescents, closed today with a sweeping set of new commitments from governments and other stakeholders.

The Global Forum, 11-12 October 2023, was organized by PMNCH – the world’s largest alliance for women’s, children’s and adolescents’ health – to galvanize attention to the needs and priorities of adolescents and young people around the world. The Forum closed today with the launch of the “Agenda for Action for Adolescents”, based on the opinions of 1.2 million young people ages 16-24, collected in more than 80 countries through the What Young People Want (WYPW) initiative, the world’s largest survey of young people.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 1.5 million adolescents and youth died in 2021, averaging 4,500 deaths every day from preventable causes. Leading causes include road traffic accidents and interpersonal violence, while mental health disorders represent a rising concern for well-being. Many young people struggle to access sexual health and family planning services, risking unplanned pregnancies. Substance use, child marriage, nutritional status (under and over nutrition) and injuries are other major concerns.

This is the time for political commitment to new policies, more resources and increased funding overall. We need more data to drive those commitments and clear indicators on adolescent well-being to track progress,” said the Rt. Hon. Helen Clark, former Prime Minister of New Zealand and Board Chair of PMNCH. “All young people everywhere must have a fair chance to contribute to their own countries and to the world and, above all, to pursue their dreams.”

The Agenda for Action for Adolescents seeks to highlight the need for far-greater action. It is based on seven main advocacy asks, including more and higher quality education and skills training; more adolescent-friendly health services; greater support for mental well-being; and more prevention of stigma and discrimination, including greater provision of comprehensive sexuality education.

Adolescents and young people have specific health and well-being challenges often overlooked in policy and investment,” said Sahil Tandon of the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, co-lead of the drafting team for the Agenda for Action for Adolescents, and a member of the PMNCH Adolescent and Youth Constituency. “In fact, less than 1.6% of development assistance for health was dedicated to adolescent health between 2003 and 2015, even though there are 1.8 billion people between 10 and 24 in the world today,” said Mr. Tandon. “The Agenda for Action is intended to galvanize attention to where it is needed most, and to align all partners in addressing these needs.”

The Global Forum also served as a launching pad for a new health and education strategy developed by the African Union, recognizing the key role that young people play in shaping the economic and social future of the continent. More than 1 billion (1.46b) people live in Africa, half (735 million)of whom are under the age of 20 (source). More than half of these commitments address the call for more vocational training and secondary/third-level education, mirroring the main priority identified by 1.2m adolescents and youth worldwide through the What Young People Want effort, launched by PMNCH earlier this year. Other pledges focus on providing affordable, high-quality adolescent health and well-being services and strengthening the agency of adolescents and youth.

As a young person, I want my leader to prioritize the health and well-being of youth. I wish for them to actively listen to our voices and concerns, ensuring that our opinions are considered in policies and programs that affect us,” said Saksham Parimal, a young mobilizer for the 1.8 Billion Young People for Change campaign and a policy engagement Fellow at the YP Foundation in Bihar, India. “I seek opportunities to have a say in decisions that shape our lives and those of our fellow youth. It's essential that our leader/government fulfils the promises they have made to young people, creating a supportive environment that enables us to thrive and reach our full potential. I believe that by investing in the health and well-being of young people, we can build a stronger and brighter future for our nation,” he said.

The Global Forum for Adolescents attracted more than 8,000 registrants over two days. Participants, including policymakers and young people, shared evidence, lived experience, and proven examples of effective policy and programming solutions. Forum sessions covered the full spectrum of challenges and opportunities experienced by young people growing up in today’s world, including the need for greater attention to adolescent well-being in schools, combating violence to foster safe spaces, and creating safety for digital natives. The Forum also saw the launch of advocacy tools, research products, innovation materials and key data to support advocacy for greater investment and commitment.

“Listening to young people helps governments to learn from our experiences and identify new ways to help us,” said Alims Blessing Iripa, 22, a youth activist from Nigeria who mobilized responses for the What Young People Want initiative. “Investing in young people's health and well-being today will pay off in the future,” she said.

Produced under the umbrella of the “1.8 Billion Young People for Changecampaign, the Global Forum for Adolescents is a key milestone in a multi-year advocacy drive led by the 1,400 partner-organizations of PMNCH and others. PMNCH has been working with young people over several years, exploring what they most want and need for their well-being, and putting their top concerns in front of decision-makers with power to ignite change.

In addition to governments, many private sector and non-state organizations have also made pledges to Adolescent Well-Being. During the Clinton Global Initiative forum in September 2023, FondationBotnar of Switzerland pledged USD$45 million to create safe online environments for young people, enhance civic engagement and make cities safe. Surgo Health, Pivotal Ventures, and MTV Entertainment Studios announced the creation of a Youth Mental Health Tracker. Ferring International pledged to prevent maternal deaths from postpartum hemorrhage and protect the lives of 20 million women and their families by 2030. Other organizations that made commitments include the Born This Way Foundation, Generation Unlimited, UNICEF, the FIA Foundation, The Wellbeing Foundation Africa, Goleadoras Foundation, One Earth and Mariwala Health Initiative.

Gendered discrimination and disrespect ‘all too common’ in legal profession

Technological disruption presents opportunity and threat

Women outnumber men in the legal profession across Australia but remain subject to persistent discrimination and harassment and are increasingly vulnerable to tech-enabled overwork and the automation of legal tasks, according to new research from the University of Sydney Business School and Australian National University.

The report, Designing Gender Equality into the Future of The Law, is the culmination of a three-phase research project designed to investigate how lawyers of all genders understand and experience the changing nature of work.

It was developed through in-depth interviews with 33 senior stakeholders in the legal profession, an online survey of 766 practicing solicitors in NSW, and seven online focus groups with 30 early- and mid-career lawyers.

“Our research found women and men agree that significant gendered inequalities exist in the legal profession, and they see this playing out across multiple dimensions, including in relation to sexual harassment, bullying, access to prestigious cases and projects, treatment from clients, promotion opportunities, and support for work-life balance,” said lead author Dr Meraiah Foley from the University of Sydney Business School.

“New technologies, the uptake of which was accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic, have been beneficial in the improvement of support for flexibility at work. But these technologies may also be contributing to an increase in unsustainable working hours. For many lawyers, the ability to work anywhere at any time has morphed into an expectation that they will work everywhere, all the time,” Dr Foley said.

“Furthermore, advances in artificial intelligence are putting certain sectors of the legal profession at risk. These are the sectors where women lawyers are over-represented, adding a gender dimension to automation risk that has not previously been recognised.”

Progress made, but discrimination remains

While the number of female solicitors relative to male solicitors has been increasing steadily since 2011, and women have comprised more than half of all solicitors in Australia since 2018, women remain markedly under-represented in senior leadership roles.

More than three-quarters (78 percent) of women and just over half (53 percent) of men surveyed agreed that sexual harassment is a problem in the legal profession, and a mere 16 percent of women and 33 percent of men agreed it is being adequately addressed.

“These results suggest that recent advocacy around the issue of sexual harassment may have increased awareness of the problem. The fact that women were more likely than men to say that sexual harassment was a problem, and not being adequately addressed, likely reflects women’s relatively greater understanding and experience of harassing behaviours at work,” Dr Foley said.

Access to flexible working was seen as a crucial factor in progressing gender equality in the legal profession, allowing lawyers greater flexibility around where and when they work.

However, study participants were concerned that without appropriate policies and safeguards in place, the same technologies that enable this flexibility may exacerbate the legal profession’s existing culture of ultralong hours and overwork.

Future of disruption and opportunity

The automation of legal tasks and the proliferation of new technologies were identified as key factors reshaping the profession and industry.

“There is widespread agreement that technology and automation are revolutionising the formerly ‘bread-and-butter’ or ‘core’ legal services, such as document review, due diligence, e-discovery, and conveyancing – with both positive and negative impacts,” Dr Foley said.

“There’s a perception that technology is dividing the industry between lower-value, generalised ‘legal work’ that could be easily automated, and higher-value, tailored ‘legal advice’ – and there is a disproportionate concentration of women in practice areas and specialisations more likely to be affected.”

Respondents said the technological-driven loss of junior roles would disrupt the traditional career pathway, making it harder for junior lawyers to gain the skills necessary to progress in their careers.

They also predicted that with the automation of core functions of legal service delivery, ‘soft skills’ such as empathy and communication would become more important.

The President of the Law Society of NSW Cassandra Banks said the report contained valuable insights which can assist the profession to better reflect gender equity in its workplaces:

“This timely release of the results of this research follows the publication last month by the Law Society of NSW of guidance to legal practice leaders on addressing the gender pay gap and other workplace issues, including flexible working arrangements and allocation of work.

“Many firms and legal practices are already focused on gender equity and know the benefits of supporting all their talent. As I have previously acknowledged, the entire profession has a part to play in creating fairer workplaces.”

Justine Anderson, President of the Women Lawyers’ Association said:

“The Designing Gender Equality into the Future of the Law report raises a number of issues for women in the law including potential biases experienced by caregivers who are unable to engage in ultralong hours or the culture of presenteeism; the impacts of technology on women lawyers, equal remuneration, promotional opportunities, sexual harassment and bullying. The latter being something that still remains a work in progress for the industry.

“As this report demonstrates, technology has been both a blessing and a curse for lawyers and further guidance and governance would be assistive. The Women Lawyers’ Association of NSW will use this research to take action to advocate for women in the legal profession regarding these critical issues. We would like to thank our partner, the Law Society of NSW for contributing to this research project and to the researchers who have contributed to this ground-breaking and timely report.”

The research was funded by the Australian Research Council and the University of Sydney in partnership with the Law Society of NSW and the Women Lawyers’ Association of NSW. The authors declare no conflicts of interest.

PayNearby, India's largest branchless banking and digital network, announced that its meta-commerce platform – PayNearby Mall, has registered exceptionally low return rates, helping its partner brands optimise costs. The platform which enables easy availability of goods and services in an assisted mode at the last mile has generated a return rate of ~10% when the average rate typically ranges between 20-30%.

In the last six months, over ~25,000+ retailers have enthusiastically embraced the platform. Interestingly, when compared to the urban and metro areas, where e-commerce penetration is high, PayNearby Mall registered a 46% GTV in rural regions, closely tailed by semi-urban areas, with 45%. This shift in consumer behaviour suggests that rural India is increasingly embracing the e-commerce revolution and is as aspirational as its urban counterpart. The most sought-after categories include grocery at 35%, followed by mobile and accessories and cloths at 14% and 9% respectively.

In the e-commerce industry, returns frequently arise from prevalent issues such as impulsive purchases, inaccurate item selection, or unmet customer expectations. However, a substantial number of product returns can significantly impact the financial performance of e-commerce operations. Each returned item incurs expenses associated with processing, restocking, and potential damages, increasing operational costs and logistical complexities. It erodes the profit margins significantly. PayNearby Mall’s innovative assisted meta-commerce model, which blends the convenience of digital commerce with the personal touch of PayNearby retailers, allows partner brands to optimise the costs associated with processing returns.

In areas where e-commerce adoption is low, PayNearby Mall allows partners to bring their products at neighbourhood stores. Customers can walk into these nearby stores and with the help of the local retailer access products on an aggregated e-platform of 100+ partner sites, and shop easily for the products they need. The personalised approach of this unique model helps customers make the right decision and buy the right products, reducing the likelihood of returns due to impulsive buying or incorrect item selection. It results in enhanced cost efficiency for e-commerce players, preserving profit margins and contributing to their overall financial sustainability.

Speaking on the development, Anand Kumar Bajaj, Founder, MD & CEO, PayNearby, said, “E-commerce has transformed how people shop. But with it comes the challenge of returns. Studies show that 54% of buyers consider free returns as one of the biggest factors influencing their buying decisions. However, high return rates often impact the financials, customer satisfaction, and overall operational efficiency of businesses. PayNearby Mall's low return rate underscores the effectiveness of our approach. On one hand, our meta-commerce model empowers rural consumers by bringing the products they want within their reach. On the other hand, with our retailers offering the human touch in helping customers make informed decisions, our e-commerce partners are seeing reduced returns rates, optimised costs and increased revenue.”
