Safeguarding Learning in Turbulent Times: Underscoring the Importance of Resilience Following a Rise in Security Requests and Evacuations

To mark International Day of Education, International SOS, the world's leading health and security risk services company, underlines the essential role of proactive measures in promoting the health, security and wellbeing of the global education community. This focus is increasingly crucial as educational exchanges and trips resume amidst an increasingly complex geopolitical context and the enduring effects of the global crises.

Despite ongoing challenges, UNESCO and the Institute of International Education reported that in 2023, the total number of globally mobile international students at the tertiary level remained consistent at 6.4 million1. As students participate in educational excursions and exchange programmes, their exposure to diverse environments also brings potential risks. From unexpected illnesses and accidents to security threats and cultural challenges, institutions must be prepared to mitigate these risks and ensure students' wellbeing throughout their journeys.

A heightened need for resilience is also reflected in International SOS' data, which saw a 20.2% increase in security advice and assistance requests and a 29% increase in evacuations and repatriations from scholastic clients. This surge underscores the growing complexities and uncertainties faced by students and staff, underlining the crucial role of proactive risk management in ensuring their safety and wellbeing.

Henning Snyman, Regional Security Director at International SOS, said “The past few years have challenged educators and institutions on multiple fronts, from navigating immediate demands of online learning and supporting students through pandemic-related anxieties to managing the ever-present risks of a changing world. While the resumption of international mobility within the education sector offers exciting opportunities, this pursuit must be coupled with risk management strategies. Navigating the complex interplay between academic freedom and risk management presents a significant challenge for educators and institutions in today's globalised education landscape.

“Partnering with overseas providers with local expertise can help educational institutions navigate the dynamic travel landscape and strengthens on the ground support for trip participants. Institutions must, however, clarify shared responsibilities for support and emergencies, ensuring seamless integration with their own plans and procedures. Leveraging expertise from the ISO 31030 framework, International SOS is actively involved in the development of the new ISO 31030 standard – Risk Management for Youth and School Trips. This document will provide guidance for managing risk for youth and school trips for both domestic and international travel and include guidelines for creating an emergency response plan.”

Dr Nikki Mepham, Regional Medical Director at International SOS, said “Beyond security threats, educational institutions should also evaluate the destination’s prevalent diseases and local healthcare capability. It is crucial to ensure that all students and accompanying staff are up to date with their vaccinations, taking antimalarials if prescribed and taking measures to avoid insect bites. By educating and implementing comprehensive prevention and management strategies, schools can minimise the risk of contracting infectious diseases during these outings.

“Psychosocial factors such as cultural adjustment, travel anxieties and potential language barriers should also be considered. Pre-departure workshops and access to mental health resources can support students and staff, providing them with coping mechanisms and also addressing concerns before they arise. Investing in wellbeing, from physical health to mental resilience, allows educational institutions to foster a thriving learning environment where students can explore the world confidently while ensuring their safety.”

International SOS offers proactive strategies for educational institutions to ensure the health, wellbeing, and security of their communities:

1.     Conduct thorough pre-travel risk assessments for all educational trips: consider the destination's security and medical landscape, students' unique profiles and potential cultural challenges. Consider whether particular requirements are necessary for individuals with special needs.

2.     Provide students and staff with pre-travel health and safety briefings: educate them on local customs, cultural sensitivities health and safety protocols, and emergency procedures. Equip them with resources and communication tools to navigate diverse environments.

3.     Invest in comprehensive infection control plans for campuses and travel programmes: implement hygiene protocols, prepare for outbreak scenarios, and ensure access to proper medical resources.

4.     Equip trip leaders with incident management protocols and 24/7 assistance and support capabilities: ensure they have appropriate coordination with local providers, access to trusted information and resources to handle unexpected situations.

5.     Improving mental health literacy and addressing stigma: training school staff, teachers and peer groups in psychological first aid.

Successful Rare Surgery at Eternal Hospital using Bio-Inductive Collagen Implant

Business Wire India
In a groundbreaking achievement, a complex surgery was performed at Eternal Hospital to repair a rare Tendon Achilles avulsion using a cutting-edge bio-inductive collagen membrane named “Regenten.” This marks the first-ever implementation of such a procedure in the state of Rajasthan and only the third time in North India, with a total of 40 cases reported nationwide.

The 45-year-old patient, Sunita (name changed), was struggling to walk due to a rare injury to her Tendon Achilles, making any weight-bearing impossible. Dr. Aditya Soral, Associate Director and Sports Injury Expert at Eternal Hospital, successfully conducted the intricate surgery.

Challenging Treatment for a Rare Injury

Dr. Soral explained that Tendon Achilles injuries are already rare, and when it involves an avulsion of the Achilles tendon, the challenges escalate. Even after surgically placing the tendon in the correct position, there is a high risk of it displacing again due to limited blood flow in the area and the degeneration of the tendon.

State's First Use of New Implant

In this case, a bio-inductive collagen implant named “Regenten” was employed for the first time in the state of Rajasthan. This implant, developed by Smith and Nephew, acts as a collagen scaffold aiding in the recovery of the tendon. Dr. Soral highlighted its potential applications in ankle injuries and rotator cuff injuries of the shoulder.

Acknowledgments and Collaborative Efforts

The success of this case was attributed to the collaborative efforts of the anesthesia team led by Dr. Mona Bana, as well as the support from senior orthopedic surgeons Dr. Rajeev Bhargava, Dr. Vinay Gupta, and Dr. Akash Bansal & Dr. Aakanksha Chandra. The hospital's MD & Co-Chairperson, Manju Sharma and CEO Dr. Pracheesh Prakash, expressed their satisfaction in providing advanced and seamless treatment to the patient.

Zamit conducts an Interactive Workshop on ‘Perception & Communication of Nonverbal Cues’

An interactive workshop was held on Zamit, a leading AI-enabled solutions provider for the education ecosystem, on ‘Perception & Communication of Nonverbal Cues’ for students between 11-18 years of age. The engaging session, focussed on refining nonverbal communication, provided practical tips one can adopt to navigate cultural perceptions and enhance effectiveness in social interactions.

The session was helmed by Dr. Smriti Ahuja, a leading trainer and communication expert whose core expertise lies in Human Resource Management, Business Studies, Organisation Behaviour, Principles of Management, Business Communication, Spoken and written English, and English Grammar and management subjects.

The session covered topics such as – unlocking dynamics of body posture, eye contact etiquettes, a factsheet on facial expressions and touched upon how to be mindful of cultural perception to identify barriers to social perception that need to be worked through.

It also discussed 'Proxemics' at length, which is the study of human use of space and the effects that population density has on behavior, communication, and social interaction. It is one among several subcategories in the study of nonverbal communication, including haptics (touch), kinesics (body movement), vocalics (paralanguage), and chronemics (structure of time).

Dr. Smriti Ahuja, a communication expert and a soft skills trainer, shared, “In a world where communication spaces are being defined by Zoom school, virtual meetings, limited content verbalisation, text-led interpretation and crisp insta-reel content, the in-person communication skills have gone for a toss. Hence, much is left to be desired when it comes to interpersonal skills, which are needed to navigate real-life situations. Younger students need help with nonverbal cues such as facial, head, hand, or body movements, as well as auditory, tactile, or olfactory cues, which offer rich inputs to understanding one’s behaviour and attitude towards various facets of life.”

Abhijeet Mukherjee, CEO of Zamit, shared his thoughts on the significance and influence a session of this nature can exert on the development of young minds. He shared, “At Zamit, our commitment lies in fostering the all-encompassing growth of students and equipping them with AI-powered solutions to unlock their inherent capabilities. Becoming a better communicator is the most sought-after skill that needs to be honed to interpret your surroundings, in the academic, professional and social landscape, and help you express through gestures and pleasing overall personality attributes. The earlier these developing minds are empowered with such knowledge the better it is for them. Dr. Ahuja's valuable insights will help the participants greatly to decode real-life situations. With the aid of the practical tips shared in the session, these young adults can develop and enhance the non-verbal and perceptive skills that will facilitate their interaction immensely.”

Zamit stands out as an innovative solution provider dedicated to reshaping the education landscape through its exclusive Measure, Improve, and Monitor (M-I-M) approach. Harnessing advanced AI technology, Zamit offers personalised enhancement solutions for both students and teachers, supported by insightful Learner Analytics (LA).

47% of female Indian earners in metrostake independent financial decisions: DBS Bank India and CRISIL survey

·         51% of women prefer low-risk financial instruments like fixed deposits and savings accounts, while only 7% invest in stocks

·         Half of the salaried women surveyed have never taken a loan

In a pioneering effort to understand the way urban Indian womenplan, prioritise and manage their money, DBS Bank India, in partnership with CRISIL, have undertaken a comprehensive study entitled ‘Women and Finance’. The first of three reports was launched today, based on the survey that was designed to reveal the financial preferencesof women, both salaried and self-employed, across various life stages.Over 800 women were surveyed across 10 cities in India on a wide range of behaviours, including their involvement in financial decision-making, goal setting, saving and investing patterns, adoption of digital tools as well as their preferences for different banking products.

In the context ofthestagnatingrate of female participation in the workforce and a persistent gender pay gap, the insights from this studyare pertinent for businesses, regulatorsand financial institutions as well as a revelation when it comes to understanding the variations of Indian women’s relationship with their finances. The survey findings pointed to factors like age, income, marital status, presence of dependants and home location asmajor influencers of the financial behaviour of women.

Decision making dynamics and evolution of goals

Whether it's charting out their children's educational paths or balancing multiple, competing financial goals, women are not bystanders, but are at the helm, shaping the future of their families. An encouraging 98% ofsalaried and self-employed Indian women actively participate in long-term family decision making. In fact, the findings revealed that about 47% of them make independent financial decisions, a reflection of women’s growing financial autonomy.Age and affluence play a pivotal role in shaping these decisions. Women over 45 years old, with their wealth of experience, emerge as the leaders, with 65% making independent financial choices compared to 41% of those aged 25-35 years.

The report provides a fascinating glimpse into the growing empowerment of earning, metropolitan women. Across India, a woman’sprimary long-term financial priority evolves with age. Buying/upgrading a home is priority number one for those between 25-35 years, while it evolves to children’s education for those in the 35-45 year category and to medical care for those above 45 years of age. Expectedly, retirement planning is seen entering the consideration set for the first time in the 35-45 year age cohort.

Prashant Joshi, Managing Director and Head of Consumer Banking Group, DBS Bank India, said “The insights from the survey highlight the importance of financial stability in the aspirations of independentfemale earners across India. Ownership of financial decision making, diverse investment and borrowing choices and growing adoption of digitalchannels are all evidence that the modern Indian womanis not just a participant, but a planner ofher journey. More than 35% of our ownDBS Treasures customer base are female and we have seen many inspiring examples of how women can take charge of their own finances. TheDBS Women and Finance study is a step forwardin the much-needed movement to a more equitablefinancial playing field and it underlines our commitment toenabling all customers to ‘Live more, Bank less’.”

Saving, borrowing and investment behaviour

Women earners in the metros tend to be risk-averse with 51% of their investments parked in fixed deposits (FD) and savings accounts, followed by 16% in gold, 15% in mutual funds, 10% in real estate and just 7% in stocks. This tracks with behaviours fromDBS Bank India’s own customer insights where 10% of female customers have an active fixed deposit, while just 5% of male customers have opened an FD.

The presence of dependents understandably plays a major role in women’s investment behaviour. Specifically, 43% of married women with dependents conservatively allocate 10-29% of their income to investing, while in contrast, a quarter of married women without dependents choose to invest over half of their income.Regional variations lend greater depth to the insights. For example,Hyderabad and Mumbai lead the way in credit card usage, with 96% of women in Mumbai relying on credit cards, while only 63% of women in Kolkata use them. More significantly, the report revealed that half of the salaried women stated that they have never taken a loan. Among those who have borrowed, the majority opted for a home loan, which reflects the deep cultural importance associated with homeownership in India.

The study also deep dived into women’s usage of different banking and payment channels.33% of those in the 25-35 age bracket prefer to use UPI for online shopping, while only 22% above 45 years use UPI. This finding aligns with the customer profile of digibank by DBS, the mobile-first, digital bankwhere more than 78% of the female user base is below 40 years of age. The report showed that UPI stands out as the preferred choice for urban women for a variety of payment needs: money transfers (38%), utility bills (34%) and e-commerce purchases (29%), signalling decreasing dependency on cash. Although regional nuances were stark in some cases with only 2% of women in Delhi opting for cash payments, while 43% of women from Kolkata favoured this option.

DBS has been a part of India's journey since 1994, and it is the largest foreign bank in the country by branch presence with a physical footprint of 530 branches in 350 locations. With the study Women and Finance and its three-part report, DBS Bank India aims to gain a deeper appreciation of the evolving needs and aspirations of women in Indiain order to better support holistic financial management and growth.
