India’s reputation as the “Pharmacy to the World” is Potentially Under Threat

Substandard Imports of IPA add to the Quality Burden

India’s pharmaceutical industry, widely recognised as the 'Pharmacy to the World,' faces a significant threat as substandard Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) and non-pharmacopoeia grade IPA from China floods the market. This alarming trend not only endangers public health but also undermines India’s self-reliance journey and its global standing as a quality manufacturer of pharmaceutical products.

This critical solvent, especially in its pharmacopoeia-grade form, is essential for manufacturing safe and effective drugs and medical supplies. However, the growing influx of substandard and non-pharmacopoeia grade IPA, primarily from China, poses grave risks. By FY 2023, Chinese imports accounted for 64% of India’s IPA supply, up from 57% in FY 2020. The use of this substandard material compromises the quality and safety of pharmaceutical products, threatening public health on a large scale.

“India's reputation as a global provider of affordable, high-quality medicines is at stake,” said Vikas Biyani, an expert who has closely worked with the Food and Drug Administration.

“The use of non-pharmacopoeia grade IPA can severely compromise the efficacy and safety of life-saving drugs. With 75% of IPA consumption in India directed towards the pharmaceutical industry, ensuring the use of only quality IPA including pharmacopoeia grade IPA as per pharmaceutical industry requirement is crucial and a matter of public safety,”said Vikas Biyani.

The unchecked dumping of underpriced, substandard IPA from China is also a direct threat to India’s efforts toward Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India). As local producers struggle to compete with the flood of low-cost imports, India's ability to maintain its current production capacities is at risk. Expanding new domestic capacities may become financially unviable under current market conditions, potentially disrupting the country’s strategic objective of self-reliance on essential pharmaceutical supplies.

Biyani said “India’s journey towards Atmanirbharta in the pharmaceutical sector is severely affected if the influx of substandard IPA and non-pharmacopoeia grade IPA continues unchecked. This will not only make public health suffer, but the long-term viability of India’s domestic pharmaceutical production could collapse, much like what happened with Penicillin-G in the early 2010s. That collapse led to a dependency on imports and exposed the sector to sharp price hikes and supply disruptions.”

In response to this critical issue, the Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR) has made recommendations for the imposition of anti-dumping duties on Chinese IPA imports. Once implemented by the government, this positive step will provide crucial support to the domestic industry, helping stabilise prices, safeguard local jobs, and ensure the continued production of high-quality, safe pharmaceutical products.

“The DGTR’s recommendation for anti-dumping measures is a critical intervention,” stated Biyani. “It will help to achieve Atmanirbharta in the pharmaceutical sector by ensuring the availability of quality inputs from domestic industry, reinforcing public health safety, and upholding our country’s position as a global leader in pharmaceuticals. Swift implementation by the government is essential to prevent long-term damage to the sector and to ensure that India continues to provide high-quality, affordable medicines to the world.”

As India strives to retain its leadership in global pharmaceutical exports, valued at INR 2.32 trillion in FY 2022-23, protecting the quality of all input materials including solvents is paramount. By supporting domestic industries and regulating substandard imports, India can ensure that its pharmaceutical sector remains resilient, globally competitive, and aligned with its Atmanirbhar Bharat vision.

Airtel cracks down on SPAM, launches India’s first AI-powered network solution for SPAM detection

AI solution processes 1 trillion records on a real time basis. Flags 100 million spam calls and 3 million SMSes every day

In a pioneering move to curb the country’s spam menace, Bharti Airtel (“Airtel”), today, launched India’s first network-based, AI-powered spam detection solution that will significantly solve the issue of spam calls and messages for its customers.

A first-of-its-kind solution by a telecom service provider in the country, the tool will alert customers in real-time to all suspected spam calls and SMSes. The solution is free of cost and will get auto-activated for all Airtel customers without them having to raise a service request or download an app.

Gopal Vittal, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Bharti Airtel said, “Spam has become a menace for customers. We have spent the last twelve months to solve this comprehensively. Today marks a milestone as we launch the country’s first AI-powered spam free network that will shield our customers from the continuous onslaught of intrusive and unwanted communications”.

“Designed as a dual-layer protection, the solution has two filters – one at the network layer and the second at the IT systems layer. Every call and SMS passes through this dual-layered AI shield. In 2 milliseconds our solution processes 1.5 billion messages and 2.5 billion calls every day. This is equivalent to processing 1 trillion records on a real time basis using the power of AI. Our solution has been able to successfully identify 100 million potential spam calls and 3 million spam SMSes originating every day. For us, keeping our customers secure is a burning priority.”  Vittal added.

Developed in-house by Airtel’s data scientists, the AI-powered solution uses a proprietary algorithm to identify and classify calls and SMSes as “Suspected SPAM”. The network powered by state-of-the-art AI algorithm analyses various parameters such as the caller or sender's usage patterns, call/SMS frequency, call duration amongst several others, on a real time basis. By cross-referencing this information against known spam patterns, the system flags suspected spam calls and SMSes accurately.

Additionally, the solution also alerts customers to malicious links received via SMS. For this, Airtel has built a centralised database of blacklisted URLs and every SMS is scanned in real time by a state-of-the-art AI algorithm to caution users from accidently clicking on suspicious links. The solution can also detect anomalies such as frequent IMEI changes – a typical indicator of fraudulent behavior. By layering these protective measures, the company is ensuring its customers receive maximum level of defense against the evolving landscape of spam and fraud threats.

Empowering Dreams Through Tech: The Remarkable Success Stories of Masai School alumni

Masai School, a platform that builds a bridge connecting skills with opportunities, has succeeded in accomplishing the dreams of more than 5000 students across India. Working as an outcome-driven career institute, it has trained more than 100 batches and scaled up over the years with 6,000 current enrolments. Completing five years this month, the organisation has ensured to fulfil its sole goal of unlocking the human potential of India by making the education system outcome-driven.

Sukhmani Kaur, a Kurukshetra native, was known as the “engineer of the house” because of her constant enthusiasm for technology. Sukhmani's passion in technology started in high school, but she had to wait before she could be enrolled to Masai School. She encountered family pressure to pursue a traditional professional route after graduating from college, but she stayed committed to pursuing technology through online classes and self-study.

Sukhmani faced several difficulties when she eventually joined Masai, which included a severe case of typhoid and self-doubt. Since the SDET (Software Development Engineer in Test) route fit her better, she switched from web development to it. Her largest obstacle was losing her grandmother the night before an important employment interview. Sukhmani overcame her sorrow, aced the interview, and was hired by Traya Health as a quality analyst. After six months in the position, Sukhmani looks back on her path and says, “My family's constant encouragement gave me the strength to keep pushing forward, Masai that gave me the direction, confidence, and the practical skills needed to turn my passion into a successful career.”

Himanshu Gauba, a civil engineering graduate from Gurgaon, struggled to find his footing after a failed startup venture with friends. He was eagerly looking for a stable job and then came across Masai School’s ‘pay after placement’ coding program and decided to take the jump into tech, despite initial reservations.

With mentorship from Masai’s instructors, Himanshu not only developed coding expertise but also vital communication and presentation skills. Today, Himanshu works as a frontend developer at Decision Point, where he is responsible for building interfaces and working on AI-related project. Reflecting on his journey, Himanshu said, “Masai bridged the gap between my struggles and success. The experience was transformative and gave me a solid foundation for my tech career.”

Rishabh Gupta, a B-Tech graduate in Computer Science from Delhi, was blinded by the traditional education system, especially after facing setbacks while studying for government exams. Masai’s emphasis on practical skills and real-world projects offered Rishabh the perfect opportunity to pivot his career.

Inspired by Masai’s ‘pay after placement’ model, Rishabh joined the full-stack web development program. He immediately noticed the difference between Masai’s hands on approach and the theoretical focus of his college experience. Through real-world project work and constant feedback, Rishabh’s skills and confidence grew. He completed the program and secured a role as a Junior Software Engineer at Cloud Bloom. “Masai gave me the practical experience I needed to succeed in the real world. It’s more than just coding; it’s a complete transformation.”

While speaking about Masai School, Prateek Shukla, CEO and Co-founder of Masai School, said, “We aim to offer a platform to sharpen the skills and to unlock the potential of the students with assured outcomes delivered. We are dedicated to introducing new schemes and expanding the teams by collaborating with established firms, thereby expanding the opportunities for the students. We envision ourselves progressively transforming the education ecosystem.”

Along with joining hands with major firms in the industry, Masai School has developed collaborations with three IIT firms, i,e., IIT Guwahati, IIT Mandi, and IIT Ropar and the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), breaking barriers and pushing the limits of what's possible.
